A car with three old men on the Westbound Long March

After a year of planning for the Westbound Long March, after three pushes, I finally set off on the second day of the Mid-Autumn Festival on September 25, 2018. In the follow-up time, I will upload what I saw and heard during the month-long 10,000-kilometer journey and share it with everyone.

The first stop in Yudu, the first crossing of the Long March, happened to meet an old couple in Beijing who ran a long distance for 24 hours to the old area in southern Jiangxi for a red tour; then arrived in Yuduli Village, which is bounded by the Licun River and in the direction of the county. It is the white area, and the direction of Qilu Mountain is the red area. Coincidentally, two old Red Army soldiers who were comrades-in-arms Guo Shufeng’s predecessors also sacrificed for the country.

On September 25, at the starting point of the Long March in Yudu, I had a conversation with a Beijing couple who came to Ganzhou for a red tourism.

A couple of retired old couples in Beijing traveled long distances for 24 hours to go on a red tour to the old districts in southern Jiangxi.

Chen Jitang and the Red Army privately negotiated to allow the Red Army to pass through the blockade to reduce the losses of both sides, but it was not communicated to the frontline troops and a battle broke out, resulting in the sacrifice of Hong Chao, the first division commander of the Red Army on the Long March. The three of us came to the scene of the battle to pay homage to Commander Hong Chao and the Red Army soldiers who died.

On the night of the 25th, we stayed overnight in Wujing, Nanxiong City, Guangdong Province. The itinerary on the 26th was to take the Red Army to break through the second blockade (Wujing, Nanxiong, and Dayu lines). The Cantonese warlord Chen Jitang left a 20-kilometer passage for the Central Red Army to go to Hunan. Wujing, Nanxiong, Shixing, Renhua, Chengkou, Sanjiang, Rucheng.

After visiting Shatian, continue to Shazhou Village, Wenming Town, Rucheng. Due to the high mountains and dangerous roads, considering the time limit, the journey from Shatian to Wenming Expressway will be reduced by nearly 2 hours. Shazhou Village is the place where the story of the half quilt during the Red Army’s Long March took place. This story well explains what a Communist Party is. After lunch, we will go to Yizhang, Jiahe and Ningyuan.

When passing through Jiahe County, Hunan, I went to look for the Red Army Tomb

On September 27, it was already 7:00 p.m. when I arrived in Dao County, Hunan Province. Before entering the county, I found a restaurant by the national highway for dinner, and stayed in Dao County at night. After breakfast the next day, we continued to look for the footprints of the Red Army in Daoxian County – the tomb of Martyr Chen Shuxiang, Zhou Dunyi Square in Daoxian County, and the Red Army Wall.

During the Long March, the Red Army stayed in Dao County for ten days to prepare for crossing the Xiangjiang River. The Red Army rushed to cross the Xiaoshui River twice here, which opened the prelude to the Xiangjiang Battle. The “Red Army Wall” in Dao County is located near the south head of Xiguan Bridge. It is a very famous relic and site of the Red Army in Dao County.

The slogan on the wall of the Red Army was written by a 14-year-old Red Army soldier who was only 14 years old when the Red Army was about to leave Dao County. The enemy chasing after him was hit by a bullet and fell into the river to die unfortunately.

This slogan is the only one preserved in a conspicuous place in the county town among the more than ten provinces that the Red Army passed through during the Long March, so it is very precious. This slogan was originally on the screen wall of the Confucian Temple. Because of the low-lying terrain and frequent flooding, it was moved here when the Confucian Temple was rebuilt in 1995.

The tomb of the martyr Chen Shuxiang by the Xiaoshui River commemorates the heroic commander of the 34th Division of the Red Army who died in the most heroic way.

From November 11th to 13th, 1934, when the Red Thirty-Fourth Division broke through the third blockade line, it desperately resisted the enemy in Yanshou, Rucheng, Hunan. Passed the mountain trail heading west from Yanshou.

When breaking through the fourth blockade line, the 34th Division was ordered to serve as the general cover task of the Red Army. It was at the end of the Long March team and successively sniped the enemy on the border of Hunan (Dao County, Hunan Province) and Guangxi (Waterwheel area of Yongan, Guangxi). Yu Ji’s enemies fought fiercely for four days and four nights, successfully covering the main force of the Red Army to cross the Xiangjiang River. After the cover task was completed, the Red Thirty-Fourth Division dropped from more than 6,000 people to less than 1,000 people. Then the Red Thirty-Fourth Division fell into the frantic pursuit and interception of the enemy. On December 10, 1934, Commander Chen Shuxiang was ambushed and attacked. He was shot in the abdomen and injured, and his intestines flowed out.

On December 12, Commander Chen Shuxiang’s injury worsened further. He decisively ordered the rest of the troops to rush through the enemy’s firepower network quickly, while he and two guards stayed behind to cover the transfer of troops, but unfortunately were arrested. Facing the rampant enemy, Chen Shuxiang was unyielding, refusing food and medical treatment, and continued to fight against the enemy.

On December 17th, the enemy carried Chen Shuxiang to Dao County to ask for rewards. Halfway through the journey, Commander Chen Shuxiang took advantage of the enemy’s unpreparedness, inserted his hand from the wound into his abdomen, pulled out his intestines, and shouted with all his strength. , tore his intestines, and sacrificed heroically. The enemy then killed two more of his bodyguards.

The Red Thirty-Fourth Division successfully completed the important task of covering the main force of the Red Army to cross the Xiangjiang River. After losing contact with the main force, it still persisted in fighting until the last moment.

Next to the tomb of Martyr Chen Shuxiang is a monument to the 6,000 unsung heroes of the 34th Division.

After visiting the footprints of the Red Army in Dao County, our itinerary changed to Shuangpai County next door to meet our comrades in the coastal defense force.

Drive to Yangmingshan.

After leaving Yangmingshan Scenic Spot to say goodbye to comrades-in-arms, we headed to Guanyang County, Guangxi Province. We arrived in Guanyang after 8:00 pm. Everyone ate a bowl of Guilin rice noodles on the side of the road and found a hotel to stay. In the public computer in the hotel lobby, I imported the things taken by drones and cameras in the past few days to the mobile hard disk, and made some videos at the same time. The next morning, we set off from Guanyang County, Guangxi, and visited the main battlefield of the Xiangjiang Battle in depth. Visited Xinxu Blocking Battlefield Memorial Hall, Jiuhaijing Red Army Martyrs Martyrdom Site and Xinxu Battlefield Ambulance Station.

Towards the end of the terraced field tour, a fire broke out in the opposite village. We are watching the fire from across the mountain and conducted a live broadcast on WeChat.

On the night of the 30th, we stayed overnight in Xi Town, Lao County, Tongdao County, Hunan Province.

After the Battle of Xiangjiang, the Red Army entered the mountains on the border of Hunan and Guangxi, crossed the old mountain boundary, and came to Tongdao Dong Autonomous County in Hunan today. On December 12, 1934, a meeting of the central leaders concerning the life and death of the Red Army was held here – the channel meeting.

This meeting was the first time since the Long March that Comrade Mao Zedong’s correct opinions were adopted, and the Red Army decided to march towards Guizhou, where the enemy was weak. At this time, Chiang Kai-shek had mobilized 200,000 heavy troops to set up a “pocket formation” on the Red Army’s northward journey to Xiangxi. At the critical moment of life and death for the Party and the Red Army, the channel meeting made necessary preparations for the Political Bureau of the Central Committee to convene the Liping meeting to make a decision to change the strategic policy, and also created the prerequisites for the successful convening of the Zunyi meeting and the realization of a great turning point in history. The channel meeting is also called “channel transfer”. This turn changed the fate of the Red Army and the history of the Chinese revolution.

“What does the Liping Conference mean to us today?” In the Liping Conference Memorial Hall, the guides answer such questions every day. “Dare to break new ground, dare to break through, dare to win” these few big characters engraved on the stone wall on the right side of the main entrance of the memorial hall are the answer.

On December 18, 1934, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China held the first Politburo meeting during the Long March in Liping, negating the erroneous military line of Bogu and Li De, and independently chose the forward route of transferring troops to northern Guizhou, laying the foundation for the Zunyi meeting. ideological and organizational basis.

Liping County is the largest and most populous county in Qiandongnan Prefecture, in which the Dong nationality accounts for the main population of the county. The county seat is located in Defeng Town, which was built in the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty. Now the ancient town is well preserved, and the most distinctive street in the ancient city is Qiao Street, also known as Dongmen Street.

On the evening of October 1st, I arrived in Zhenyuan Ancient City, Guizhou Province, and lived in Zhenyuan County. I have been here for 16 years, so I rested early and prepared to go to Zunyi the next day.
