As a global leader in electric mobility, the BMW Group is continuously expanding cooperation within the industry. On June 5, 2019, BMW Group and Jaguar Land Rover announced their joint cooperation in the development of a new generation of electric drive technology. The fifth-generation BMW eDrive electric drive technology will support innovations with Jaguar Land Rover in the field of future electrification. The two companies will promote the vigorous development of electric mobility with a common technological vision.
The BMW Group continues to plan for future mobility and actively seeks cooperation in the field of innovation for future mobility, with a view to providing more customers with updated electric drive technology at the beginning of the next decade. Currently, the automotive industry is facing major technical challenges in the fields of automation, interconnection, electrification, and sharing/service (ACES). Therefore, it is particularly important for automakers to share technology and resources through cooperation.
Under the leadership of the new “First Strategy”, the BMW Group is firmly committed to the wave of vehicle electrification and has established a leading position in the global luxury electric mobility field. With a rich array of electric vehicle products and the largest market share among traditional luxury car companies, BMW Group is leading the development of the global luxury electric vehicle market.
Highly integrated electric drive system
The BMW Group and Jaguar Land Rover announced that they will jointly develop next-generation electric drive technology to promote the development of electrification technology in the process of transformation towards the new four modernizations in the future.
The BMW Group and Jaguar Land Rover share a common strategic vision for the development of future-proof, greener electric drive technologies. Since the BMW Group launched the BMW i3 in 2013, the BMW eDrive electric drive technology has completed several iterative upgrades, and the BMW Group has thus accumulated rich experience in electric drive technology. Jaguar Land Rover has also demonstrated its excellence in electric drive technology with the launch of the Jaguar I-Pace and its plug-in hybrid variant.
At present, the BMW Group is actively developing the fifth-generation BMW eDrive electric drive system. The cooperation between the electric motor, transmission and power electronic devices in this system will be further optimized. This integrated design will also effectively reduce costs. In addition, the motor will no longer use rare earth materials, which can reduce the group’s dependence on rare earth resources. The fifth-generation BMW eDrive electric drive technology will be applied to the pure electric BMW iX3 model for the first time, which will be produced in Shenyang in 2020 and exported to the world.
Mr. Fu Lexi, director of research and development of BMW Group, said: “The automotive industry is undergoing a major transformation. We believe that in the field of electrification, cooperation is the key to a successful transformation. Jaguar Land Rover’s requirements for electric drive technology are fully compatible with ours. Through cooperation we can shorten the Development time allows new models and new technologies to enter the market faster to better meet customer needs.”
In this cooperation, BMW Group and Jaguar Land Rover will save costs through joint research and development of future technologies, collaborative production planning, and joint procurement to achieve a win-win situation. In Munich, the BMW Group and Jaguar Land Rover will form an expert group to further develop fifth-generation electric drive technology and produce electric drive equipment tailored to their respective needs.
Continue to lead the new energy vehicle ecosystem and lead the development of electric travel in the industry
Currently, the BMW Group is leading the development of electric mobility in the Chinese market, creating a comprehensive and leading new energy vehicle ecosystem, and providing Chinese customers with a rich array of new energy products and high-quality green experience. Leading charging technology, continuously improving charging facilities and services are another example of BMW leading the field of electric mobility. In the field of public charging services, BMW has built the largest public charging network in China – the instant charging public service network. By the end of 2019, the number of charging piles will exceed 100,000.
Facing the future, BMW has clear development goals and blueprints, and will further expand the array of new energy products to meet the needs of different customers and continue to lead the wave of electric travel. By the end of 2020, the BMW Group will launch more than 10 new and upgraded electric products. In addition, in 2021, BMW i4 and innovative pioneer model BMW iNEXT will also join the array of new energy families one after another.
As a leader in electric travel, BMW has laid a solid foundation for the implementation of the new energy strategy in China. Under the guidance of the new “first strategy”, BMW will accelerate the development of electric travel and continue to lead the luxury new energy vehicle market.
