On the occasion of early summer, Porsche officially released the four-wheel drive sports car 911 Targa 4 and 911 Targa 4S. This is the third body style released by the eighth-generation 911 after the hardtop and convertible. The new Targa models feature an innovative fully automatic roof system. This iconic design continues from the original 1965 model year, including the distinctive wide roll cage, a removable roof over the front seats, and a wraparound rear windshield. The roof can be easily opened and closed in 19 seconds. The two new models are now available for pre-sale in the Chinese market. The MSRP of the 911 Targa 4 is 1,499,000 yuan, and the 911 Targa 4S is 1,695,000 yuan.
Both new cars are powered by a 3.0-liter flat-six twin-turbo engine. With an output of 283 kW (385 PS), the 911 Targa 4 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono Package, which is 0.1 seconds faster than its predecessor. With an output of 331 kW (450 PS), the 911 Targa 4S accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds in combination with the Sport Chrono Package, 0.4 seconds faster than its predecessor. The top speed of the 911 Targa 4 is now 289 km/h, an increase of 2 km/h, while the 911 Targa 4S can reach 304 km/h, an increase of 3 km/h.
Both new cars are standard equipped with Porsche 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox (PDK) and intelligent four-wheel drive Porsche Traction Management (PTM) to create the ultimate driving pleasure. Porsche has applied a large number of innovative technologies to further enrich the configuration highlights of the two new cars. Thanks to the improved Smartlift function, the vehicle has increased ground clearance, making it more suitable for everyday driving. Original Porsche Tequipment (Porsche Tequipment) and Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur can provide a large number of configuration options for the new car. Porsche will also launch a special edition of the 911 Targa, which combines traditional style elements, timeless design and cutting-edge technology. It is expected to be released in June.
Efficient twin-turbo boxer engine
Like the 911 Carrera models, the two new 911 Targa models are powered by a 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbocharged boxer engine, which has achieved a further increase in output power. As a result, both performance and everyday usability of the vehicle benefit. The engine of the 911 Targa 4 develops a maximum power of 283 kW (385 PS) at 6,500 rpm, an increase of 11 kW (15 PS) compared to the previous model. Peak torque of 450 Nm is available from 1,950 to 5,000 rpm. With a maximum output of 331 kW (450 PS), the 911 Targa 4S is 22 kW (30 PS) higher than the previous model. Peak torque has increased by 30 Nm over the previous generation to 530 Nm and is available from 2,300 to 5,000 rpm.
Optimized four-wheel drive for better traction
The increased performance of the two new four-wheel drive vehicles also benefits from the further development of front-axle drive. The clutch and differential elements are water-cooled. Reinforced clutch plates are stronger and increase load capacity. The clutch allows for greater torque transfer, enabling more precise modulation and optimum front-axle drive function. Ultimately, the improved front-axle drive combined with Porsche Traction Management (PTM) results in even better traction in all conditions.
Further developed chassis for increased comfort and safety
The new 911 Targa model is equipped with PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management System) electronically controlled variable damping system as standard, which can automatically adjust the damping characteristics to make driving comfort and handling suitable for the corresponding driving situation, and provides two manual adjustment modes: “Normal” and “Sport”. Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus), standard on the Targa 4S and optional on the Targa 4, incorporates an electronic rear differential lock that offers fully variable torque distribution. Like other eighth-generation Porsche 911 models, the Targa comes standard with Porsche’s “Wet” mode, which detects how slippery the road is through sensors mounted in the front wheel arches and sends a signal in the instrument cluster, Reminds the driver to manually switch to “Wet” mode. The driving responsiveness is then adapted accordingly to ensure maximum driving stability.
The 911 Targa 4 is fitted with 235/40 ZR 19 front and 295/35 ZR 20 rear tires, mated to light-alloy wheels. The 911 Targa 4S models are fitted with 245/35 ZR 20 front and 305/30 ZR 21 rear tires, mated to light-alloy wheels. The front and rear wheels of the 911 Targa 4 are equipped with 330 mm brake discs and black four-piston monobloc fixed calipers. The 911 Targa 4S features red six-piston calipers at the front and red four-piston calipers at the rear; 350 mm discs are used at both the front and rear. Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) is available as an option.
A modern interpretation of the distinctive Targa design
The body of the new 911 Targa borrows design elements from the 992 model, with significantly more prominent front wheel arches than its predecessor. The clearly recessed bonnet between the LED headlights recalls the design of the original 911. The rear of the car adopts a widened stepless adjustable stretched rear spoiler and an elegant light strip that seamlessly blends with the body. With the exception of the front and rear, the entire body shell is now entirely made of aluminum.
The clear, straight lines of the dashboard are complemented by recessed instruments, and the interior design is the same as that of the 911 Carrera models. Its inspiration comes from the 911 models of the 1970s. In addition to the Porsche-typical central tachometer, two ultra-thin, borderless polygonal displays provide the driver with additional information. The compact switchgear is arranged below the 10.9-inch central display of the Porsche Communication Management (PCM), with five buttons for direct control of the main vehicle functions. The standard PCM includes group data-based online navigation and an upgraded version of the smart interconnection module (Connect Plus) that supports Apple Car Play®.
A new class of sports car born in 1965
The 911 Targa 2.0, born in 1965, opened up a completely new vehicle concept. The Targa’s original pitch was “a safe roadster with a roll cage.” But with its detachable roof, the model quickly became a stand-alone vehicle concept and style icon. Even today, the Porsche 911 Targa combines the fun of “open-top driving” with the everyday comfort and safety of a coupe.
