Mazda won the “2020 Science and Technology Award from the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology”

Shanghai, April 8, 2020—R&D personnel of Mazda Motor Corporation (hereinafter referred to as “Mazda”) won the “Minister of Science and Technology Commendation in the Field of Science and Technology” for their development project of bioengineering plastics (hereinafter referred to as “bioengineering plastics”) “Science and Technology Award (R&D Department)” in The “Science and Technology Award (R&D Division)” is awarded to those who have achieved remarkable results in research and development in the field of science and technology. This is the seventh time Mazda has won this award, following the award-winning next-generation clean diesel engine “SKYACTIV-D1.5” in 2018.

The bioengineering plastic developed by Mazda is an environmentally friendly material that uses plant-based raw materials to reduce the use of petroleum resources, thereby reducing CO2 emissions. At the same time, the coating process is eliminated, thereby reducing VOC*1 emissions.

The uncoated technology developed by Mazda achieves high-quality textures (deep tones, mirror-like smoothness) that cannot be achieved with conventional coatings through the material coloring process, and can be used for decorative effects that Mazda vehicle designs are intended to exhibit. Since it was first applied to the “MAZDA MX-5” in 2015, this technology has also been adopted in large exterior parts such as the front grille of “MAZDA CX-30” and other models.
