Not just an RV: The Escape injects some style into this tiny house movement.
The escape house looks like a cabin but is actually rated as an RV (photo: Canoe Cove).
Perhaps due to the fact that the challenge of designing viable tiny homes prompts architects to come up with innovative, space-saving solutions, the tiny house movement is bursting with many good ideas. The latest such home to come to our attention, called The Escape, is a 37-square-metre (400-square-foot) home that’s beautifully designed, has plenty of customizable options (including running completely off-grid), and has the legal status of a motorhome .
The Escape was conceived as a vacation cottage, first home or rental property and is well stocked for small-scale living. The interior contains a main living area, bathroom and separate toilet, bedroom and a kitchenette. Each room can also be customized with various options including steam showers, air conditioning and dishwashers. The porch can also be converted into a semi-outdoor multifunctional space.
Due to its legal status as a motorhome – or Park-style motorhome to be exact – Escapes are mounted on a motorhome chassis and wheels and therefore do not require a proper foundation and are not subject to the same tax and planning laws as permanent structures . Just to be clear, though, it’s not an electric motorhome, and it doesn’t contain an engine, so you won’t be driving it on the road. It also requires a mobile truck to be transported like a mobile home, and cannot simply be towed by a large-sized car like an OTIS.
Think of an escape as a vacation cabin, first home, backcountry retreat, or rental property.
Given its size, there isn’t much extra room to play with, but judging by the photos, the Escape doesn’t fall into the usual pitfalls of resembling a large shed. Indeed, the design owes much to Frank Lloyd Wright (the designer cites the influence), and thanks to touches such as wooden window frames, hardwood floors, cedar siding and large overhangs, the stunning Pleasant country look.
The house is said to heat very efficiently and has a tight (though not perfectly airtight) enclosure. While there are no efficiency figures, Escape’s website notes that its sealed gas fireplaces are adequate for the worst of Wisconsin’s winter weather. In terms of all-important storage, there is a large closet and built-in wardrobes in the kitchen and bathroom, drawers in the bedrooms as well as cupboards.
